explosive plays
Zone Blocking Scheme
Core Concepts
Zone blocking is a system where each lineman is
responsible for a specific area (zone) rather than a specific defender.
This creates consistent rules and allows for easy identification of run
fits.
Inside Zone (IZ)
- Concept: Run between the tackles, follow double
teams to linebackers
- O-Line Rules:
- Center: Big-on-big (NT/MLB), work to backside LB if
no threat
- Guards: Big-on-big with Center/Tackle, climb to 2nd
level
- Tackles: Big-on-big with Guards, vertical set
vs. pass rush look
- Back Rules: Press hole, work through B gap, cut
based on flow
- Key Coaching Points: Stay square, maintain gaps,
finish blocks
Outside Zone (OZ)
- Concept: Stretch defense horizontally, cut back
against flow
- O-Line Rules:
- All linemen: Reach block, get helmet to outside
shoulder
- Backside: Cut-off any penetration, work to 2nd
level
- Back Rules: Get wide, press the edge, cut when
defense overruns
- Key Coaching Points: Patience, vision, don’t outrun
your blocks
Gap Scheme
(Counter/Power)
- Concept: Double team + pull for specific gap
control
- Counter Trey: Pull guard and tackle, kick out +
wrap
- Power O: Pull guard, fullback lead through
hole

Core Route
Combinations
1. Stick Concept
(vs. Zone)
- Outside WR (X): 6-yard hitch
- Middle WR (Z): 8-yard stick route (sit in
zone)
- Inside WR (H): 12-yard dig/crosser
- Read: High-low the linebackers, Z sits in soft
spot
2. Smash Concept
(vs. Man)
- Outside WR (X): Speed out (5-6 yards)
- Middle WR (Z): Corner route
- Inside WR (H): Seam/corner option
- Read: Pick/rub action, leverage defender with
high-low
3. Flood/Mills Concept
- Outside WR (X): 18-yard comeback
- Middle WR (Z): 12-yard square-in
- Inside WR (H): 8-yard drag
- Read: Overload zone coverage, work inside-out
4. Four Verticals (Air
Raid)
- All Receivers: Vertical stems, convert based on
coverage
- vs. Cover 2: Bend routes to seams at 18-20
yards
- vs. Cover 3: Outside WRs convert to comebacks at
12-15
- vs. Man: Push vertical, use speed
